Fabulous Fall Figs!

blog Fall figs

Right now I’m in New Jersey visiting my parents.  This morning I was able to walk to the backyard and pluck an enormous, organic, deep purple fig right from the tree! (see pix below!) While I nibbled on the freshly sliced fig, I started thinking about the health benefits of figs, and why we don’t often hear so much about this ancient fruit? We often see figs in fall accompanying meals, cheese plates, baked goods, and spreads.  But, the fig is its own sort of super fruit!  Enjoyed fresh, or dried, figs do have numerous health benefits.

Figs are loaded with potassium and fiber which help keep the body healthy through aiding digestion and healthy elimination.  Figs are considered to have antifungal and antibacterial properties which help the immune system do its job.  Even fig leaves can be dried and made into a tea for an extra anti-inflammatory, cancer-fighting, antioxidant brew!

I hope you’re enjoying this gorgeous fall season! Next time you enjoy a fig, think of all of the healthy goodness your giving your body!  In the meantime, I’m looking for some healthy fig recipes... maybe for Thanksgiving...I’ll let you know what I come up with.  If you have a fig recipe to share, I’d love to know!
